He became an All-American at West Virginia University and was selected by the Minneapolis Lakers – who relocated to Los Angeles before he played his first game – in the 1960 NBA Draft. He wore Laker gold for fourteen seasons, became one of the most respected two-way guards in the league's history, earned fourteen All-Star selections, and finally won the championship he deserved when the 1971–72 Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA title with 69 wins in the regular season, still one of the most dominant single-season performances in league history. West passed away on June 12, 2024, at the age of 86.
