📋 What Is Printed On This Label

Every line of type on the sheet, transcribed from the label itself rather than paraphrased:

  • Valley Queen
  • BRAND
  • NET WEIGHT 28 LBS.
  • CALIFORNIA
  • EMPEROR GRAPES
  • C. D. PRUNER & SON
  • GROWER & PACKER
  • EXETER, CALIFORNIA
  • PRODUCE OF U.S.A.
  • STECHER-TRAUNG S. F., CALIF.

Printer: the lithographer is named on the sheet — STECHER-TRAUNG S. F., CALIF., set in microtype in the margin.

This is a grape lug label. CALIFORNIA / EMPEROR GRAPES is printed in large dark capitals in the right-hand panel, with NET WEIGHT 28 LBS. filled in — not left blank — in a pale blue box at lower left. Twenty-eight pounds is the standard Emperor grape lug. Emperor is a late-season table grape, grown on vines, packed in Tulare County.

The packer is C. D. Pruner & Son — GROWER & PACKER, EXETER, CALIFORNIA. The middle initial is printed on the sheet.

The printer signed it. STECHER-TRAUNG S. F., CALIF. is set in grey microtype centred along the bottom of the illustration just above the navy border rule. A small printer's ornament precedes it. No form number follows.

On condition. These are sold from an unused stack, so this describes the printing rather than one individual sheet: the ink is unfaded, the stock is unmounted and ungummed, and the sheet was never applied to a crate. Anything materially wrong with a particular sheet is disclosed plainly.
