🏷️ What Is Printed on This Label

Read off the sheet itself, verbatim — this is the label's own printed text, not a description of it:

  • NET WEIGHT 28 LBS.
  • PRODUCE OF U.S.A.
  • Lady Rowena
  • BRAND
  • CALIFORNIA FRUITS
  • EMPERORS
  • PACKED AND SHIPPED BY
  • IVANHOE FRUIT ASSOCIATION
  • IVANHOE, CALIFORNIA
  • BLUE ANCHOR
  • CALIFORNIA FRUIT EXCHANGE

The Blue Anchor. The entire right end of the label is a large yellow disc with a cream rim carrying the California Fruit Exchange's fouled-anchor trademark — a navy anchor lettered CALIFORNIA on the stock, FRUIT down the shank and EXCHANGE across a banner at the crown, with BLUE ANCHOR in red beside it. Exchange affiliation is to deciduous fruit what Sunkist is to citrus, and it is the most collectible thing on this sheet.

Be precise about which Exchange this is. The California Fruit Exchange (Blue Anchor) marketed deciduous fruit — grapes, pears, plums. It is not the California Fruit Growers Exchange, whose mark is Sunkist, and no Sunkist device or tissue-wrapped fruit appears anywhere on this label.

The fruit is EMPERORS — the Emperor table grape — printed in red inside its own pale mint-green panel, under CALIFORNIA FRUITS. No listing had named the fruit at all. The brand wordmark itself is set in cream blackletter/gothic script, the one typographic choice carrying the medieval theme, and the two armoured knights in the centre fight with raised swords on horseback — not a joust.

No printer's imprint appears anywhere on the sheet and there is no printed date; the 1950s dating rests on the trade record and the owner's notes.
