Remember Dos Equis Die-Cut Coasters? ๐Ÿบ Dos Equis XX Die-Cut Beer Coaster, Double-Sided, Labatt USA Years

Size: 6" x 3" ~ Never used.

This coaster is cut in the shape of the famous two X's, and it's printed on both sides. The front is the classic Dos Equis look: one X in bright red and one in deep maroon, edged in gold, with DOS EQUIS across a gold banner, a round gold medallion with a man's profile in the middle, and IMPORTED BEERยฎ underneath.

Flip it over and it becomes a little menu. "One Beer. Dos Flavors." The gold X is the AMBER: "Brewed since 1897, Dos Equis Amber is known for its rich color and superior quality. Dos Equis Amber ensures a robust flavor, smooth drinkability and a perfectly balanced blend of malt and hops." The green X is the SPECIAL LAGER: "a crisp, golden lager with a refreshing, classic flavor ... a distinctive, refined taste that only traditional European-style pilsners can offer." Across the bottom: "Let Your Tastes Travel.โ„ข" And in tiny type along the edge, the importer's line, Labatt USA, Norwalk, CT.

โœ–๏ธ Why Two X's

That "Brewed since 1897" is the whole story of the name. Dos Equis was first brewed in 1897 by Wilhelm Hasse, a German-born brewer in Mexico, at the Moctezuma brewery near Orizaba, in the state of Veracruz. Americans have been able to buy it since 1973, when Dos Equis Amber was first imported from Mexico, and the Lager Especial followed it north in 1983. With a new century coming, he named his beer Siglo XX, "Twentieth Century," and marked the bottles with the Roman numeral XX. People just called it by what they saw on the bottle, dos equis, "two X's," and that became the name.

๐ŸŒŽ How It Got to Your Bar

The Moctezuma brewery was brought together with Cervecerรญa Cuauhtรฉmoc of Monterrey in 1985, adding Dos Equis, Superior, Sol and Noche Buena to a family that already included Carta Blanca, Tecate, Bohemia and Indio. Then in 1994 the Mexican company FEMSA sold a 22 percent share of its beer business to John Labatt Ltd. of Canada and signed an agreement to team up their companies in the United States. That partnership is the Labatt USA of Norwalk, Connecticut, named on the edge of this coaster. Heineken announced in January 2010 that it was buying FEMSA's beer business.

It's a great piece for a home bar, a breweriana wall or anybody whose favorite beer has two X's on it.
