🎯 A Row of Bullseyes Coming Right at You

I'm a sucker for a good die-cut, and this one earns it. VANTAGE runs across the top in bold blue block letters, and underneath it a whole line of blue-and-orange bullseye discs comes marching back into the distance until the last one — the closest to you — actually lifts up off the cardboard. It's a counter sign built to grab a shopper's eye from clear across a drugstore aisle, and fifty years later it still does the job.

📋 What's Printed On the Sign

This is New Old Stock — they vary a little one to the next, but every one in the stack folds out the same way, with a hinged easel back that lets it stand up on its own on a counter or shelf. The sign carries its whole pitch right on the face: "It's probably the lowest tar and nicotine cigarette you'll enjoy smoking," with the Surgeon General's warning underneath and the tar and nicotine numbers spelled all the way out — Filter: 12 mg. tar, 0.8 mg. nicotine; Menthol: 11 mg. tar, 0.8 mg. nicotine, citing an FTC report from March 1975. Down in the corner it reads "(c) 1975 R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.," and, printed small, "Litho in U.S.A. 689." The back is plain.

🚬 Vantage, Arriving Just As the TV Ads Went Dark

Vantage came out nationwide in November 1970, R.J. Reynolds' answer to smokers who had started reading the tar and nicotine numbers. The trick was the filter: instead of being solid all the way across, it had a conical hole straight through the center. The ads promised the flavor of a full-strength cigarette without anywhere near the tar or nicotine, and the line they ran under was "The new cigarette that doesn't cop out on flavor." The timing is the part I find interesting. The brand showed up barely two months before cigarette commercials came off American television and radio for good on January 2, 1971, so Vantage grew up on magazine pages, posters and counter signs just like this one. Reynolds still makes it today as a non-support brand, which means no advertising behind it, just kept on the shelf wherever people still ask for it.

📑 Why a Counter Sign Carries Lab Numbers

That fine print along the bottom is my favorite part. In 1970 the Federal Trade Commission worked out agreements with the big cigarette makers to print tar and nicotine figures, measured by the FTC's own test method, in their advertising, and to run the Surgeon General's warning in the ads too, not just on the pack. It's the same practice that put numbers in every magazine ad of the day, and it's why this sign names its source right there on the face: "FTC Report MAR. '75." The warning is the one-line wording from the 1969 law: "Warning: The Surgeon General Has Determined That Cigarette Smoking Is Dangerous to Your Health."

🏭 R.J. Reynolds, Out of Winston, North Carolina

The name down in the corner goes back a long way. Richard Joshua Reynolds, a Virginia tobacco farmer's son, came to Winston, North Carolina, because it had the railroad, and by the mid-1870s he was turning out chewing tobacco there in what folks called the "Little Red Factory." His company got pulled into James B. Duke's tobacco trust in 1899 and came out on its own again when the trust was broken up in 1911. In 1913 Reynolds brought out Camel, which became a runaway success, and that same year the town of Winston merged with its neighbor Salem. That's where two of the company's best-known brands got their names: Winston in 1954 and Salem in 1956. By the time this sign was printed in 1975, Vantage sat right alongside them in the Reynolds lineup.

🎬 Where Vantage Turns Up

Vantage has a way of turning up in good company. In the last scene of Reversal of Fortune, the 1990 film with Jeremy Irons as Claus von Bülow, he steps up to a drugstore counter and asks for "two packs Vantage." Donna Tartt slipped the brand into The Secret History, where a minor character stubs one out. Bette Davis smoked them in her last years. The photographer Jim Herrington, shooting her at her West Hollywood apartment in the late 1980s, remembered little white porcelain vases on every flat surface, each one sprouting Vantage filter kings. And the story goes that John Belushi was a Vantage man too.

🗓️ Dated Twice Over, By the Sign Itself

This one dates itself without me having to guess at anything — the copyright line reads 1975, and the tar figures are footnoted right there on the face to an FTC report from March of that same year. I like it when a piece just tells you exactly when it's from.
