That's Batman punching Batman, and that's the whole story. In the summer of 1994 Bruce Wayne came back to take his cowl from the man who'd been wearing it, and DC put out this postcard to tell you exactly which ten comics to buy to watch it happen.
On the left is Bruce Wayne in the classic grey suit, blue cowl and cape, yellow oval on the chest, landing a right hook. Taking it is the armored Batman of Jean-Paul Valley: gold plate across the chest and shoulders, one red lens in the cowl, clawed gauntlets with blade fins, and a scalloped cape spiked like bat wings. There's the red DC bullet logo in the corner, the signatures Nolan '94 and S. Hanna printed right into the art, and the line ® TM DC Comics © 1994. All Rights Reserved. Printed in Canada.
Flip it over and the left half is a charcoal panel with the official KNIGHTSEND checklist, a little tick box in front of every issue: July '94, Parts 1 to 6 (Batman #509, Shadow of the Bat #29, Detective Comics #676, Legends of the Dark Knight #62, Robin #8, Catwoman #12), August '94, Parts 7 to 10 (Batman #510, Shadow of the Bat #30, Detective Comics #677, Legends of the Dark Knight #63), and then the KnightsEnd Aftermath in Robin #9 and Catwoman #13. The right half is the mailing side, PLACE STAMP HERE and the address lines, printed over a big pale cracked bat emblem.
In Knightfall, Bane broke Bruce Wayne's back, and Jean-Paul Valley took over as Batman. Valley was Azrael, created by Denny O'Neil and Joe Quesada in 1992, a grad student who'd been conditioned as an assassin for the Order of St. Dumas, and he built himself that armored suit. KnightsEnd is where Bruce, healed and retrained by Lady Shiva, takes the cowl back. It ends in the Batcave: Bruce opens a hatch over the very hole he fell into as a boy and lets the sunlight into the night lenses of Valley's helmet, and Valley takes the mask off and gives it up. Fans call the whole three-part run the KnightSaga. DC's writers built it to answer the gritty, "violent hero" style that ruled 90s comics and show the traditional Batman made the better hero; they even drew Valley with that style's ballooning muscles and tiny feet. Which is exactly what you're looking at: the classic Batman winning.
My favorite detail is that cracked bat on the back. Every KnightsEnd cover carried a bat-in-oval badge in the corner that starts out shattered on Part One and pieces itself back together issue by issue until it's whole on Part Ten. The card prints the broken one.
Graham Nolan was born in 1962 in Long Beach, New York, and he's the artist who designed Bane and co-created him with writer Chuck Dixon (Bane's first appearance was Vengeance of Bane #1, January 1993). He later drew The Phantom Sunday strip and won an Inkpot Award in 2014. Scott Hanna is a Pennsylvania inker who spent five years on Detective Comics through Knightfall, Knightquest and KnightsEnd, then about fifteen years on Spider-Man, many of them inking John Romita Jr., and he's won several Inkwell Awards.
The two of them were the pencils and inks on Detective Comics #676 and #677, Parts 3 and 9 right there on the checklist, and their names sit on this drawing in the same order, Nolan on top and Hanna underneath. The picture isn't one of the KnightsEnd covers. It's its own promo drawing, and the signatures are printed, so every card has them. Collectors will tell you these went out to comic shops.
That DC bullet in the corner is Milton Glaser's design from 1976. It went on DC covers in 1977 and stayed there until 2005.
