Fingernail Tattoos for Rangers Fans? 🏒 Rangers Blue, From the Gretzky Years

Size: 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"

For a Rangers fan in the late 1990s, no team gear was too small to matter — right down to a fingernail. These cards have sat sealed since the Gretzky years at Madison Square Garden, never pressed onto a nail, exactly as it left the factory.

🃏 What's Actually on the Card

Eight Rangers shields and two "NEW YORK RANGERS" wordmark tattoos fill the cream sheet, all printed mirror-image so they read correctly once pressed face-down and transferred, the same way any water-slide decal works. The header card above shows an arena scene with a scoreboard reading GO TEAM, a bilingual round seal — OFFICIAL LICENSED PRODUCT / PRODUIT LICENCIE OFFICIEL — wrapped around the old NHL shield, the five-point pitch (Easy to apply, Easy to remove, Waterproof, Lasts for days, Safe & non-toxic), and FINGERNAIL TATTOOS. The sheet itself carries no printed year, just "(c)NHL." Flip the card over for four application steps — the example tattoo drawn there is a round "B," a Bruins-style mark rather than anything Rangers, since Play-By-Play used one generic back across its whole NHL line — plus ITEM #77-805, a UPC shared across that whole line and not unique to this pack, MADE IN TAIWAN, and DISTRIBUTED BY Play-By-Play TOYS & NOVELTIES, SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS 78218. These come to us as a stack, and the card photographed here is a fair sample of the batch — expect the same clean, never-applied condition throughout, with most running as nice or nicer than what's pictured.

🕰️ Dating a Card With No Year on It, and the Gretzky Seasons

Nothing on this card prints a year, so it dates itself by what it does carry: that old black-and-orange NHL shield, retired after the 2004-05 season, and Play-By-Play's own hockey license, which first shows up in its filings for the year ending July 1999 (the company had stopped filing with the SEC entirely by September 2001). That puts this card somewhere from the late 1990s into the early 2000s — the last years of the old NHL shield. The wordmark on the sheet, New York stacked over Rangers in red block letters, matches the "New York Rangers" lettering the team adopted in 1996/97, which fits that same window. Those were the Wayne Gretzky years at the Garden: he signed with the Rangers as a free agent on July 21, 1996, rejoining Mark Messier, and played his final three NHL seasons in New York, helping the team reach the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals. It wasn't all smooth after that — 1997-98 ended 25-39-18 and out of the playoffs for the first time since 1992-93, the first season since 1990-91 without Messier, who'd left for Vancouver, and head coach Colin Campbell was fired mid-season for John Muckler. In February 1998, players from this era went to the Nagano Olympics, the first Winter Games to include active NHL players. The 1998-99 season — Gretzky's last in the league — ended with the Rangers out of the playoffs again. This card comes from somewhere in the middle of all of it.

🎪 Play-By-Play, San Antonio

The distributor printed on the back has its own story. Arturo Torres left Cuba for the United States in 1961 and started out washing dishes at a Texas Pizza Hut; by the 1980s he was running 240 Pizza Hut and Taco Bell locations, which he sold for $125 million in 1992. He put that into Play-By-Play, building a vending-machine prize business into the country's biggest supplier to carnivals and theme parks — something close to half that market by 1998 — out of the same San Antonio, Texas warehouse printed on this card. By the time Play-By-Play picked up its NHL license, for the year ending July 1999, the company was already near its peak; it didn't last past 2001, when it fell off the Nasdaq, Torres resigned as chairman, and the company stopped filing with the SEC that September. A European branch kept the Play-By-Play name going out of Valencia, Spain, and still makes plush toys today.
