In 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt sent sixteen white‑hulled battleships—the famous Great White Fleet—on a world‑circling cruise to show that the United States had become a true blue‑water naval power. This is the outer label, the one that went on the outside of the box: square with clipped corners, a bald eagle with a stars-and-stripes shield perched right on the barrel of a naval gun, a line of battleships and a little launch behind him, WIDE-AWAKE embossed in gold across the top and TRADE MARK REGISTERED along the foot. It was never glued to anything. There's a companion inner label too, a wider one with Uncle Sam standing beside the same eagle and gun, so whoever owned the Wide-Awake brand dressed the whole box. No lithographer's name or town is printed on this one, and dealers have put the pair anywhere from the 1890s to around 1910.

🚢 The Fleet Collectors Tie It To

Collectors link this label to the Great White Fleet, and you can see why. On December 16, 1907, sixteen battleships painted white with buff trim steamed out of Hampton Roads, Virginia, on Theodore Roosevelt's orders, with some 14,000 sailors aboard. They were gone fourteen months, made about twenty port calls on six continents, covered roughly 43,000 nautical miles, and came home on February 22, 1909, Washington's Birthday, with Roosevelt there to review them. It was the country telling the world it had a real ocean-going navy, and battleships under steam turned up on everything from postcards to cigar boxes. The ships on this label are the tall, many-funneled battleships of exactly those years.

The name is older than the cigar. In March 1860 a group of young Republicans in Hartford, Connecticut, put on shiny black oilcloth capes, picked up torches and marched for Abraham Lincoln, and they called themselves the Wide Awakes. Clubs spread across the North that summer, and by election time there were hundreds of thousands of them marching at night. Long after the campaign, "wide awake" stuck around as everyday American for alert, ready and nobody's fool, which is just what you want an eagle standing guard over the fleet to be.
