Who Packed Federal Brand Fruit in Fresno? 🎩 Federal Brand, Federal Fruit Distributors of California, Fresno

Size: 11" x 3 1/2" ~ Little to no wear.

Patriotic Americana at its finest! Uncle Sam's own stars-and-stripes top hat, tipped at a jaunty angle inside a yellow sun with a red ring swinging around it like a planet, next to a big FEDERAL in white on black. This is a vintage 1950s Federal Brand fruit label, packed and shipped by Federal Fruit Distributors of California of Fresno, California, and it was never pasted on a box.

🔍 What's on it

A long 11 inch strip on a black ground. On the left, FEDERAL in big white letters outlined in red, BRAND beneath, and two red, white and blue shields. Below them, PACKED AND SHIPPED BY and Federal Fruit Distributors in red script, with FRESNO, OF CALIFORNIA and CALIFORNIA in blue. On the right, the top hat, blue brim, red and white stripes, and white stars on blue, in a yellow disc with a red ring, over REG. U.S. PAT. OFF., and PRODUCT OF U.S.A. at the corner. In tiny type at the lower right, the printer's line, A. CARLISLE & CO., with one character faint. The back is plain.

📜 A registered top hat

That top hat isn't just decoration, it's a registered trademark. Federal Fruit Distributors of Fresno filed for the FEDERAL mark on June 23, 1923, and it was registered on February 12, 1924, for fresh grapes, fresh peaches, fresh plums and fresh citrus fruits. The registered design is a drawing of a top hat with circles and ovals, the very hat on this label, and that's what the little REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. is telling you. So this sheet was printed after 1924. The registration ran for decades before it was finally allowed to lapse in 1986. The label names no fruit, so it could go on whatever Federal was shipping out of Fresno that season, and there's a Federal label for Elberta peaches too.

🖨️ A. Carlisle & Co.

The printer's line points to A. Carlisle & Co., a San Francisco printing house that bought out the old Britton & Rey lithograph firm in 1916 and printed crate labels for California growers too. The A. Carlisle name carried on all the way to 2025, when Reno Type acquired A Carlisle & Co. of Nevada.

🏡 Display

Imagine hanging this vintage advertising on your wall as home decor in any room! That Uncle Sam hat looks great framed for the Fourth of July, in a den, a kitchen or an office, and it's a perfect gift for a patriot, a veteran, or anybody from Fresno and the San Joaquin Valley.

Crate labels are a reminder of a bygone era, and the lithography on them is unparalleled even to this day, in my opinion. Museums and art institutes have galleries dedicated to them, and more and more collectors are seeking them out to preserve their history. Once the limited supply for sale is gone and on display with collectors or in galleries, they will be very difficult to acquire.
