Remember Phillips 66 Maps With Coke Ads? 🗺️ Phillips 66 Illinois Road Map with a "Coke is it!" Ad, 1980s

Size: 9" x 4" folded, about 30" x 18" open ~ New old stock.

Remember those pre-GPS days when one of these big maps was your lifeline on the open road? Somebody in the passenger seat wrestling it open while the driver tried to peek around the edges! This is a vintage 1980s Phillips 66 road map of Illinois, the free kind you picked up at the gas station, with a smiling Phillips 66 attendant on the cover and a bright red Coca-Cola "Coke is it!" ad on the back, and it's never been used.

🔍 What's on it

On the cover, ILLINOIS and the PHILLIPS 66 highway-shield logo, with an attendant in a Phillips 66 cap and uniform, an illustrated pump and oil can marked Trop-Artic ALL SEASON MOTOR OIL, a Phillips 66 credit card, and the slogan YOU'LL FIND PERFORMANCE IN EVERYTHING WE MAKE. It says COURTESY OF PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. and NOT FOR RESALE. The back panel has an Apply for your Phillips 66 Credit Card today form over a red Coke is it! ad. Inside, the whole state of Illinois on one side, and on the other, maps of Chicago and the other big cities, an index of counties, cities and towns, a state park table, and the state's 1980 Census population, 11,427,414, fifth in the nation.

That Coke ad is what dates it. "Coke is it!" was Coca-Cola's slogan from 1982 to 1988, so this map was handed out sometime in those years, even though it still quotes the 1980 Census.

⛽ How Phillips 66 got its name

Brothers Frank and L.E. Phillips incorporated the Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on June 13, 1917, and opened their first gas station in Wichita, Kansas on November 19, 1927. The new company started with $3 million in assets, 27 employees and land all over Oklahoma and Kansas, and after the huge Panhandle gas field turned up in Texas in 1918, and the Hugoton Field north of it in Kansas, Phillips went deep into natural gas; by 1925 it was the nation's largest producer of natural gas liquids. The name has a great story. As it's told, a company official was testing the new gasoline on U.S. Route 66 near Tulsa and remarked that the car was going "like 60." His driver answered, "Sixty nothing, we're doing 66!" Put the highway and the speedometer together and you had Phillips 66. The Phillips Petroleum Company Museum in Bartlesville tells it as three 66s at once: the gasoline's specific gravity was close to 66, the test car did 66 miles per hour, and the test ran on U.S. Route 66, so the naming committee voted unanimously for "Phillips 66." That's why a Phillips map belongs in any Route 66 collection, even one of Illinois, where the old Mother Road started out from Chicago.

🏡 Display

It's a perfect gift for a Route 66 fan, a gas station and oil can collector, a Coca-Cola collector, or anybody from Illinois, and it looks great framed open on the wall of a garage or a den. My pictures seriously don't do it justice.
