Remember Phillips 66 Road Maps of Kansas and Nebraska? 🗺️ Phillips 66 Kansas & Nebraska road map, 1972

Size: 9" x 4"

Remember riding shotgun with one of these spread across your lap, trying to find the next turn before the driver missed it? This is a 1972 Phillips 66 road map of Kansas and Nebraska, New Old Stock, 9" x 4" folded and about 30" x 18" open, in excellent shape with barely a crease out of place.

🔍 What's on it

The cover is sky blue with Kansas / Nebraska at the top, a Phillips 66 attendant in his cap looking off into the distance beside the big orange-and-white Phillips 66 shield, and "At Phillips 66 it's performance that counts." The back panel, "The Performers," shows a sample Phillips 66 credit card made out to John Q Public, a gold can of Trop-Artic All Season Motor Oil by a gas pump, and the pitch: the card costs nothing, works at thousands of Phillips 66 stations, and can even pay for your room and meals at Best Western Motels and Quality Inns. There's also a little red-white-and-blue map of the country with the line "A country that runs on oil can't afford to run short." Inside, the full Rand McNally map of Kansas with the Phillips 66 shield, a legend, "Discover America... Best by Car," a table of state parks and lakes with their camping, fishing and boating, and a mileage log between towns like Dodge City, Emporia, Salina, Topeka and Wichita, with Nebraska on the other side.

⛽ Phillips 66, born on Route 66

Brothers Frank and Lee Eldas "L.E." Phillips incorporated the Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on June 13, 1917, with $3 million in assets, 27 employees and land all over Oklahoma and Kansas. After the huge Panhandle gas field turned up in Texas in 1918, and the Hugoton Field north of it in Kansas, Phillips went deep into natural gas, and by 1925 it was the nation's largest producer of natural gas liquids. The name has a great story, the way the company tells it: company men were road-testing a new gasoline on U.S. Highway 66 near Tulsa, somebody remarked that the car was going "like 60," and the driver said, "Sixty nothing, we're doing 66!" They put 66 on the Route 66 highway shield, and there's your logo. The Phillips Petroleum Company Museum in Bartlesville tells it as three 66s at once: the gasoline's specific gravity was close to 66, the test car did 66 miles per hour, and the test ran on U.S. Route 66, so the naming committee voted unanimously for "Phillips 66."

And this map has a real Kansas connection: Phillips opened its very first service station, at 805 E. Central Avenue in Wichita, Kansas, on November 19, 1927. Route 66 itself cut across the southeast corner of Kansas, too. Phillips merged with Conoco in 2002 to become ConocoPhillips, and road maps like this one, free at the gas station counter, went the way of the full-service pump.
