How Did One Budd Label Work for Every Flavor? 🥤 Budd Beverages Label, The Taste Tells - Budd's Beverages, Inc., Newport, New Hampshire

Size: 4 1/4" x 3 3/4" each

This one's a pair - two of these Budd Beverages labels come to you together.

Big red Budd script over a gold soda glass, THE TASTE TELLS, and BEVERAGES in blue capitals - and here's the clever part, right under it: "Flavor designated on crown." This was the one label for every flavor, and the bottle cap told you whether you'd grabbed orange or root beer. Quality Beverages Since 1916, Budd's Beverages, Inc., Newport, N.H., one pint ten ounces. Never put on a bottle. Both of yours will look just like this one.

🏪 From a Grocery to Budd's Beverages, Inc.

The family business started in 1916 as A. Budnitz & Son - that's the "Since 1916" - and the story goes it was a grocery for Newport's Polish community that never meant to make soda at all. In 1922, the way it's always been told, they got the chance to use the Newport Bottling Works, and through the 1920s Bud's Best was the brand. The Budd name came when Alexander's son Isaac Budnitz had the Sullivan County probate court change his name to Isaac Budd, sometime between 1931 and 1933. On March 31, 1948 the business incorporated as Budd's Beverages, Inc., and the same year it opened a warehouse over in Lebanon; a 1952 Lebanon High School yearbook ad bragged "36 Years In Good Taste." Alexander Budnitz, the founder, died in Newport in 1954 at 80. Budd's was still bottling with about ten people in 1971 and closed its doors in 1972. Living in New Hampshire you hear my elders talk about Budd's with real nostalgia - by the 1930s it was known all over Vermont and New Hampshire.

🔎 Dating It

The "Inc." sets the floor: this label can't be older than March 31, 1948. It's the very same plate as the older Newport Bottling Works labels - same glass, same slogan, same 1 pint 10 ounce size - with only the line at the bottom changed to the new company name. The contents line sets the ceiling. It says 1 pint 10 fluid ounces and nothing more, and from July 1967 the federal Fair Packaging and Labeling Act made a bottle that size print its total in ounces as well. Budd's was putting its labels right on the glass by then, too - the New Hampshire Historical Society has a 1962 Budd bottle with the label fired on. That leaves the 1950s, the heart of the Inc. years, for this one.

🧾 An Ingredient List Nobody Required

Here's a funny one. From 1940 the federal food and drug people excused soda bottlers from listing ingredients on their labels, after the bottlers' association asked, and the exemption wasn't taken back until 1962, after consumers complained. Budd's printed them anyway: carbonated filtered water, flavor, sugar, citric acid and artificial flavor and color.

🏞️ Newport

Newport is the county seat of Sullivan County, a mill town on the Sugar River - three woolen mills and two tanneries by 1859 - and the birthplace of Sarah Josepha Hale in 1788, who wrote "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and campaigned until Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.

Darling framed in a kitchen or by a home bar. This is a true vintage piece. The supply is finite - Budd's closed in 1972, nobody's printing their labels again, and once these last unused ones are gone, they'll be very difficult to acquire.
