Description

Vintage 1964 Topps Roger Maris #225 Baseball Card PSA 6 EX-MT – The Professional Sports Authenticator PSA 6 EX-MT Certified 1964 Topps Baseball Card of Roger Maris, Card Number 225, Two-Time American League MVP and the Man Who Hit 61 Home Runs in 1961 to Break Babe Ruth's Most Legendary Record in Baseball

⚾ The year is 1961. The American League has just expanded its season from 154 games to 162 games, a fact that will generate controversy before the year ends. Roger Maris, right fielder for the New York Yankees, is chasing Babe Ruth's single-season home run record of 60 – a number that has stood since 1927 and that has carried, across those three and a half decades, the weight of the impossible. Mickey Mantle is chasing it alongside him for much of the summer before injury removes him from the race. The media pressure, the crowd attention, and the deliberate controversy manufactured around whether the expanded schedule should carry an asterisk if someone reached 61 transforms a baseball season into a national referendum. On the final day of the season, October 1, 1961, Roger Maris hits his 61st home run off Boston's Tracy Stallard. The record stands. The 1964 Topps card number 225, graded PSA 6 EX-MT – capturing Maris in his Yankee uniform three years after the most famous season in the history of the position – is a certified vintage piece of one of baseball's most celebrated careers.

⚾ Roger Eugene Maris was born on September 10, 1934, in Hibbing, Minnesota, and built a career before and after 1961 that often gets obscured by the single-year record: a two-time American League Most Valuable Player (1960 and 1961), a World Series champion with the Yankees in 1961 and 1962, one of the most complete right fielders of his era. PSA 6 EX-MT is the grade that certifies the card presents with slight surface wear consistent with a six-decade-old piece of cardstock handled with care – a high-grade certified example of a vintage card that every Maris collector, every Yankees collection, and every baseball history archive will recognize immediately. Condition: NOS.
