Who Brewed Robin Hood Beer in Columbus? 🏹 Robin Hood Beer Label, August Wagner Breweries, Columbus, Ohio, 1971 - 1974

Size: 4" x 2 1/2" ~ Unused.

This is a rare vintage Robin Hood Beer label from August Wagner Breweries, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio. Robin himself is drawing his longbow right at you, bearded and squinting down the arrow in a green hood and a russet tunic, out in a sunlit forest, with Robin Hood Beer in big red Old English letters across the trees.

This company was started in 1906 and is one of the few that survived prohibition. This label is from the few short years it was produced in OH. Most of the labels you see out there are from later when they moved to PA.

🏷️ What's Printed on It

There's a tiny boxed emblem at the lower left and a small mark at the lower right. The back is blank.

🍺 August Wagner and Gambrinus

August Wagner came over from Germany and founded the Gambrinus Brewing and Bottling Company in Columbus in 1906. The company made it through Prohibition as The August Wagner and Sons Products Company, and afterward sold its beer in Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia under the Augustiner, Mark V, Robin Hood and Gambrinus names. A statue of King Gambrinus stood in front of the brewery for years, and August Wagner himself is credited as the model for it. It still stands in the Brewery District.

In 1970 Wagner bought The Little Switzerland Brewing Company of Huntington, West Virginia, closed the Huntington plant in 1971 and moved production to Columbus, and the Columbus brewery itself closed in January 1974. The Pittsburgh Brewing Company bought the brand names and kept on selling Mark V, Robin Hood and Gambrinus, which is why so many of the Robin Hood labels you'll see come from Pennsylvania.

🏡 Display

They aren't making any more vintage labels once the limited supply for sale is gone and on display with collectors or in galleries then they will be very difficult to acquire. Imagine this vintage advertising hanging on your wall as home decor in any room!
