🖖 The Whole Crew, Still in the Shrink Wrap

This is a Star Trek 40th Anniversary collector poster, made in 2006, and it has never been out of its factory wrap - brown kraft board on the back, clear shrink film all the way around, the round retail sticker still stuck over the lower right corner of the image. Sealed, unopened, new old stock.

🚀 What's Printed On It

The big yellow STAR TREK logo runs across the top. Down in the lower left sits the small STAR TREK logo with the delta insignia and the anniversary line, "CELEBRATING 40 YEARS," and along the bottom right edge the licensing line: "TM, (R) & (C) 2006 CBS Studios Inc. All Rights Reserved." The sticker spells out the rest: "8" x 10" Frameable Collector Poster," the VividVision mark, "Mello Smello, Minneapolis, MN," www.mellosmello.com, the item number 16087 and a UPC barcode.

🌌 The Bridge Crew

The picture is the original series cast on the bridge of the Enterprise - the eight familiar faces of the later seasons in one frame. Kirk is seated front and centre in command gold, with McCoy at his right shoulder in blue and Spock on the other side, also in blue. Behind them stand Chekov in gold, Nurse Christine Chapel in her blue nurse's dress with the red-cross insignia, Scotty in engineering red, Uhura in red, and Sulu in gold at the far right. That's the lineup of seasons two and three: Chekov didn't join the ship until the second season, so this is the crew of 1967 to 1969.

✨ The VividVision Finish

VividVision was Mello Smello's name for its lenticular poster line - a ridged surface over a split image, so the picture shifts as you walk past it. On this Star Trek design, Kirk, Spock and McCoy are the ones that phase in and out as the viewing angle changes. This one is sealed, so that surface has never been touched.

📺 Why 2006 Got a 40th Anniversary Poster

Star Trek premiered on NBC on September 8, 1966, so 2006 really was forty years to the year - hence "CELEBRATING 40 YEARS." There's a second date story in the small print too: "(C) 2006 CBS Studios Inc." Most people think Paramount when they think Star Trek because of the movies, but the television and merchandising side of the franchise went to CBS when Viacom split into two companies at the end of 2005 - which is why a CBS line, not a Paramount one, sits on a poster made the following year.

🏭 Mello Smello and the Line It Ran

Mello Smello, out of Minneapolis, built its name in the 1980s and '90s on scratch-and-sniff stickers - the kind that filled every kid's sticker album back then. By the mid-2000s it was putting that same novelty know-how into VividVision, a lenticular poster line it ran across more than one licence: a year before this one, it made VividVision posters of Boba Fett and Darth Vader for Star Wars. Star Trek got more than one design, too. The sticker on this one reads item 16087; its sibling, item 16085, is built around Captain Kirk alone. This is the whole bridge crew.

📦 Sealed, Unopened, New Old Stock

It left the factory this way and it has stayed this way: unopened, still shrink-wrapped, the kraft backing board untouched behind it. That's what has kept the VividVision surface and the corners free of twenty years of handling. Open it if you want it on the wall in a standard 8 x 10 frame, or keep it sealed and let the wrapper keep doing what it has done since 2006.
