Retro 2006 World of Warcraft TCG Store Window Cling 🎮 GameStop Retailer Display, Blizzard Upper Deck

Size: Approx. 11" x 11" ~ printed on thick, durable plastic cling material designed for store windows. These were applied with a little soapy water and a squeegee, could be peeled off and re-positioned, and were never sold to the public - only sent to retailers as marketing. It still works as a cling or can be framed or mounted as a wall piece.

🎮 A Store Window's Worth of World of Warcraft

I have a soft spot for pieces like this one, because nobody was ever supposed to keep them. This is a die-cut window cling made for the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game - store display art, not anything a customer could ever buy off a shelf. A horned, bull-headed Tauren stands mid-cast, one fist raised and crackling with blue lightning, boxed inside a bronze ring of Warcraft runes. The World of Warcraft Trading Card Game logo sits up in the corner, and across the bottom, riding a burst of flame, it reads AUTHORIZED TCG RETAILER - the words that told everybody on the sidewalk this shop carried the game. It's a full 11 inches across, big enough to actually anchor a window the way it was built to.

🪞 Backwards on Purpose

Hold it up on its own and the art looks mirror-flipped - that's not a flaw, it's the construction. It's printed on the back of the plastic, so once you press it to the inside of a window, it flips right back around and reads correctly from the sidewalk. That's the whole trick of a cling like this, and it's a genuinely fun little "aha" the first time it clicks.

🐂 The Tauren and the Fine Print

The figure is a Tauren, Warcraft's horned, bull-headed race - no specific character is named on the piece, just one heroic pose built to stop a passerby cold. Down at the bottom, the LICENSED BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCT block sits next to the Upper Deck Entertainment logo, and squeezed between them is a sliver of legal type so small you have to lean in (and remember it's mirror-image too) - just enough of it to make out a 2006 copyright date and part of Upper Deck's own corporate address, printed right into the plastic. That's the piece dating itself, in its own ink. Like any surviving run of old store display plastic, they vary a little one to the next.

⚔️ Where This Sits in WoW TCG History

Upper Deck Entertainment announced the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game on August 18, 2005, and its first set hit store shelves on October 25, 2006. The loot cards tucked into those packs carried scratch-off codes good for real in-game prizes, and the Spectral Tiger mount they could unlock is still the one longtime players bring up first. Almost overnight, those cards became the paper version of a game millions of people were already living in. Upper Deck held the license until March 2010, when Cryptozoic Entertainment took it over, and Blizzard finally closed the game down on August 23, 2013. An Upper Deck-branded cling like this one belongs to that first stretch, and the 2006 date on its own fine print puts it right at the start of it.

🏬 How It Got Here

Mine came through the GameStop and hobby-store retailer program - the channel that put marketing like this into the stores that actually carried the cards. It was built to do a job for a season and then get peeled off and thrown out for whatever campaign came next, and it still does the one thing it was made to do: it looks great on glass.
