A Yo-Yo Shaped Like a Coke Cap? 🪀 Vintage 1998 Coca-Cola Bottle Cap Yo-Yo, New in Package

Size: 1 1/4"

Shown next to a quarter for size ~ New in package.

Original vintage 1998 Coca‑Cola bottle cap–shaped yo‑yo, still sealed in its original plastic wrap, string and all. It's shaped and colored like a big red Coke crown, crimped edges and everything, with the white Coca-Cola script sweeping across a black contour bottle, and around the rim "©1998 The Coca-Cola Company. All rights reserved." The package is marked Made in China.

Although functional as a yo‑yo, this item is best appreciated as a display‑ready collectible, and this example remains new in package, a clean, untouched piece of late twentieth‑century pop culture.

🥤 Two famous shapes in one toy

Everything on this yo-yo is Coke history. The script goes back to 1886, when Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton mixed up his syrup and sold it at Jacobs' Pharmacy as a nickel fountain drink; his bookkeeper Frank Robinson came up with the name "Coca-Cola" and wrote out that flowing script himself, working it up from the fancy Spencerian penmanship of the day. That's the same hand you see swooping across the face of this yo-yo, with a little ® tucked in after it. A few years later Atlanta businessman Asa Candler bought up the rights and built it into a national brand. The shape is the crown cap, the crimped cork-lined cap Baltimore machinist William Painter patented in 1892, which made it possible to bottle a fizzy drink and ship it far from the soda fountain. And the bottle in the middle is the famous contour bottle, patented in 1915 by the Root Glass Company.

🪀 The yo-yo craze

The American yo-yo boom started with Pedro Flores, a Filipino immigrant who began making and selling his hand-carved yo-yos in California in the late 1920s. Donald F. Duncan bought him out, trademarked the word "yo-yo," and sent demonstrators out to street corners and schoolyards all over the country to spin tricks and draw a crowd. Coca-Cola leaned on that same showmanship for decades. Jack Russell, one of Duncan's own demonstrators back then, ran his first yo-yo promotion for Coca-Cola in 1947, right in Coke's hometown of Atlanta, and all through the 1950s there were Duncan yo-yos going around stamped "Coca-Cola" on the back. Jack started his own promotions firm in 1958 and worked mostly for Coca-Cola, and in the 1970s and '80s his Russell yo-yo pros carried the craze to some 95 countries, running contests to sell Coke's soft drinks. The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History keeps a Russell Coca-Cola yo-yo from Australia in its collection, and the rarest of them all, the 1967 Russell Special Executive, was made just 220 strong as gifts for Australian Coca-Cola executives. This 1998 piece sits right in that tradition.

Here's the part I love, given what this yo-yo is shaped like. Old-timers still talk about the yo-yo men in their red jackets coming to town to show off the tricks and run the contests, and more than one of those campaigns ran right through the bottle cap. One Russell championship promotion had thousands of prize Galaxy yo-yos, the glittery ones you couldn't buy in any store, waiting under the caps of Coca-Cola and Sprite bottles: you checked under your cap, and if you'd won, you traded it in at your usual shop, off a Coca-Cola van or at the contest itself. In South Africa in the 1980s the Coke Breakdancer yo-yo couldn't be bought at all. You either won it in a contest or you saved up the yo-yo liners out of the bottle caps. So a Coke yo-yo made in the shape of the cap itself? That just tickles me.

By the late '90s Coca-Cola collecting was a full-blown hobby, with clubs and conventions, and licensed novelties like this one were made by the thousands. Most got opened, spun a few times and lost in a junk drawer, which is why one still in its wrap is a little prize.
