Remember FX 2006 Festival of Horror? 🎃 FX 2006: Festival 'O' Horror, Comic-Con & Toy Show Card

Size: 6" x 4"

If you were in Orlando at the end of January 2006, this card was everywhere. It's the two-sided show card for the 17th Annual Florida eXtravaganza, better known as the FX Show, held January 28–29, 2006 at the Central Florida Fair Grounds. One side is all horror, the other is everything else: comics, sci-fi, toys, dolls, anime and a whole lineup of TV and movie guests.

🔍 The horror side

Black and blood-red: The 17th Annual Florida eXtravaganza, the big red FX with "The Ghoulest Show on Earth!™", and Festival 'O' Horror, Toy & Collectible Show, January 28th – 29th 2006, with the Friday the 27th EarlyBird Preview and the hours for each day. Then the Ghost of Honor: Robert Englund, Freddy Krueger, with Sid Haig of The Devil's Rejects and Clayton & Sharon Hill of Dawn of the Dead, each with their picture. New Location: Central Florida Fair Grounds, Exposition Park, Orlando (An INDOOR Facility), "Don't Miss FX This Year!", "The Southeast's Largest Display of VINTAGE TOYS & COLLECTIBLES!", and the sponsors across the bottom, including Bad Apple Comics, KB Toys and AFA, the Action Figure Authority. And of course, www.FXSHOW.com.

🌎 The everything-else side

Wild comic-book color: FX, "The Coolest Show on Earth!™" with a little planet Earth, and the whole menu: Toy & Collectible Show, Comic-Con, Sci-Fi & Fantasy Fair, Festival 'O' Horror, Doll & Bear Expo, anime & gaming events. Celebrity Guests! Jorge Garcia, "Hurley" from LOST; a Happy Days Reunion with Anson Williams, Don Most and Erin Moran; Harry Potter actors Stanislav Ianevski (Viktor Krum in Goblet of Fire), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), Devon Murray (Seamus Finnigan) and Chris Rankin (Percy Weasley), plus Jamie Yeates and Tolga Safer; and Corin Nemec of Stargate SG-1. Add Urban Vinyl, exclusives, a "Creators" Alley, premiums, contests, an event party and "much much MORE!", the FX Gaming box, and "Over 1000 Tables!" I love that little FX Gaming box. It only promises "TBA!", but the logos show what they had in mind: Yu-Gi-Oh!, back when Upper Deck was distributing the cards over here; Vs. System, Upper Deck's own Marvel and DC card game that started in 2004; and HeroClix, the WizKids figures you click around the dial in the base as they take damage. Upper Deck lost Yu-Gi-Oh! at the end of 2008 and shut Vs. System down a month later. The fine print says guests were subject to change and there were fees for signing, just like every show.

🦇 The show itself

FX stood for Florida eXtravaganza, and it billed itself as six shows in one: toys and collectibles, a comic book convention, a sci-fi and fantasy fair, the Festival 'O' Horror, a doll and bear expo, and anime and gaming. The card calls this one the 17th annual, which puts the first FX back around 1990. It started as a toy show and grew into a full-blown convention, and it was a staple of Orlando for more than 20 years.

2006 was the year it moved out to the Central Florida Fairgrounds. People who were there wrote that the longest lines were for George A. Romero, Robert Englund and Sid Haig, and that Stanislav Ianevski had the young ladies screaming. The Happy Days gang turned up too, with Cindy Williams joining Don Most, Anson Williams and Erin Moran.

The horror side has some real history on it. Clayton Hill was the famous "Sweater Zombie" in George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978), and his wife, Sharon, was the Nurse Zombie. They got those first movie parts out of Pittsburgh, where they'd been doing operettas, and later became fixtures on the horror convention circuit. Clayton passed away in 2009. And one of the sponsors is gone too: KB Toys, which started as the Kaufman Brothers' candy wholesale business in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1922 and became "Kay-Bee," closed its last stores in February 2009.

🏡 Display

Frame it so both sides show, or pick your side: the horror side for a monster-movie room, the color side for a comic or toy collection. It's a perfect gift for anybody who went to FX, or anybody who grew up on Freddy, Hurley or the Happy Days gang.
