What Did a Quarter Buy From a Flintstones Vending Machine? 🦴 The Flintstones and Jetsons Removable Decals Vending Sign, 25¢ - Original Products, Inc., Mountain View, California

Size: 9" x 8"

Big Fred Flintstone grinning across a bright yellow card - 25¢, THE FLINTSTONES and JETSONS Removable Decals, 2-sided viewing, collect all twelve designs - with four little sample decals to tempt you: Barney, Dino, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm. "Great for windows, mirrors, bikes & lockers." "Just peel off & press on! Clings without glue! No sticky residue!" This is the card that went in the vending machine to sell the decals, never used. Yours will look just like this one.

🪙 What It Sold

For a quarter you got a two-sided cling decal you could stick on the window, peel off, and stick on again somewhere else - no glue. They came from Original Products, Inc. of Mountain View, California, which sold the same Removable Decals on hanging retail cards too; one of those, with this very same Fred head, carries a "© 1990 Hanna-Barbera Productions, Inc." line and Original Products' address on Old Middlefield Way. So this sign belongs to that same line, right around 1990. And look closely - the card spells it "Hanna-Barbara." The printer slipped.

📺 Hanna-Barbera and Hamilton Projects

"Licensed by Hamilton Projects, Inc." is the other clue. Hamilton Projects was the licensing agency Allan Stone started in 1972 - he also represented Charlie Chaplin, the American Revolution Bicentennial and the Smithsonian - and in 1986 he sold it to Taft Broadcasting of Cincinnati, which owned Hanna-Barbera. That studio belonged to Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, the two who made Tom and Jerry together at MGM; when MGM closed its cartoon studio in 1957, they opened their own. The Flintstones first aired in 1960, the first animated series in prime time, and the Jetsons followed in 1962; the Jetsons came back with new episodes in 1985, and the two families finally met in the 1987 TV movie The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones, which is exactly why you'll see them sold together on a card like this.

🔎 The Fine Print

The phone number is (415) 968-2700 - Mountain View moved to area code 650 in 1997. And the warning reads "CAUTION: Small Parts. Not recommended for children under 3," the softer wording from before the Child Safety Protection Act of 1994 made toy labels say "CHOKING HAZARD" starting in 1995. Even the studio's name fits: Hanna-Barbera Productions, Inc. is the name it went by from 1959 until 1992. Turner Broadcasting had bought the studio in late 1991, and by 1993 it was Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Inc. Everything on it points the same way: the early 1990s, right alongside that 1990 peg card.

A fun one for a game room, a kid's room or anybody who remembers feeding quarters into the machines by the grocery store door.
