🚀 Could Japan's Own Toho Studios Answer Star Wars in 1977?

They tried — and this vivid Belgian theatrical poster for The War in Space (Wakusei Daisensō) is an original piece of that answer's international release history. Issued through Belgian distributor Cosmopolis Films, this is New Old Stock: unused, unhung, straight from the distributor's own paper archive.

This 22" x 14" poster carries Belgium's own signature oversized format and original locally-commissioned artwork, distinct from the Japanese and American campaigns for the same film. Directed by Jun Fukuda for Toho Studios — the studio behind Godzilla — and featuring veteran Toho actor Akihiko Hirata, The War in Space follows the space battleship Gohten as it defends Earth from an alien invasion, riding the wave of space-opera enthusiasm that Star Wars had just ignited worldwide.

🎬 Toho's Answer to the Space Opera Boom

By 1977, Toho had spent over two decades building its reputation on Godzilla and kaiju cinema, and The War in Space shows the studio pivoting toward the space-battle spectacle that Star Wars had just made a global phenomenon. Practical model effects, miniature spaceship battles, and a defiantly analog approach to space combat give the film its own distinct character — a Japanese studio's take on a genre Hollywood was about to make its own for the next decade.

🇧🇪 Cosmopolis Films & the Belgian Format

Belgium is the only country that developed its own dedicated poster size and house style for imported films rather than reprinting the originating country's art, and Cosmopolis Films was one of the distributors behind that tradition. This poster is part of a larger holding of unused Cosmopolis Films stock that came to light in a 2007 find, when the distributor's own paper archive was dispersed — meaning what's here is what survived, with no reprint run behind it.

🖼️ Display Ideas

  • 🖼️ Frame it in a sleek black or silver frame to complement the space-age artwork

  • 🎬 Pair it with Godzilla or other Toho collectibles for a studio-focused display
  • 🌌 Anchor a media room or home theater with a genuine piece of 1970s sci-fi advertising
  • 🎁 Gift it to the Toho or classic sci-fi collector building out an international poster wall

🎁 Who Collects These

Toho and Godzilla-era collectors, classic Japanese tokusatsu fans, and vintage space-opera enthusiasts are the natural audience, alongside Belgian poster specialists drawn to the format's rarity relative to the more commonly seen American and Japanese release materials.
