This is a flat, credit-card style Michelob bottle opener in glossy red metal, made to ride in your wallet or pocket. One die-cut edge near the top pops the cap, and that's the whole mechanism: no hinge, nothing to break. Across the middle runs the Michelob ribbon in dark metal with MICHELOB® BEER on it, and the bottle-cap slot up top is the only opening in the piece. It's a hard one to find.

🍻 The Connoisseur's Beer

Adolphus Busch of the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association in St. Louis, Missouri brought out Michelob in 1896 as a "beer for connoisseurs," the brewery's step-up brew, and for its first 65 years it was sold on draught only. The name comes from a real place: Michelob is the German name for the town of Měcholupy, now in the Czech Republic, known for its brewing. Then in 1961 Anheuser-Busch put out a pasteurized version meant for national distribution, bottled starting late that year, in a new teardrop bottle that took Jerome Gould & Associates of Los Angeles a full year to design. That bottle won a medal from the Institute of Design in 1962, and the Michelob ribbon has been part of the look ever since, which is how you know this opener comes from after 1961.

🎬 Weekends Were Made for Michelob

If you remember the '70s and '80s, you remember the slogan. "Weekends Were Made for Michelob" started in 1976, and the family kept growing around it: Michelob Light in 1978 and Michelob Dry in 1988. The slogans kept coming too, "The Night Belongs to Michelob" in 1986 and "Some Days Are Better Than Others" in 1992, and Michelob turned 100 in 1996. Pop a cap with this and you're carrying a little piece of that era around in your wallet.
