🐍 What you're getting

These little guys are tin litho snake clickers with a crocodile's grin - squeeze the tail and the jaws snap open and shut on a spring-steel tongue for that sharp "click." Mine come in three colourways: dark green with yellow spots, black with red spots, and white with blue spots, each one with a painted face and a row of tin teeth. "JAPAN" is printed right along the tail stripe - worn away on some of them, plain as day on others.

🦗 The dime-store cricket family

Toys built this way are called "cricket" clickers - a little spring-steel tongue tucked in a housing that snaps with a click when you press it, sold by the bin at five-and-dime counters for pocket change. The design's most famous maker was English, not Japanese: Joseph Hudson founded a whistle workshop in Birmingham in 1870 that grew into today's Acme Whistles, and it was Acme's brass "cricket" that paratroopers of the 101st Airborne carried into Normandy on D-Day in 1944 - one click asking friend or foe, two clicks answering back. These tin snakes are the dime-store cousin of that piece of history, not the genuine article - a different maker, a different metal - but it's a fun bit of family tree to know.

🇯🇵 Reading the mark

"JAPAN" alone, with no "Occupied" in front of it, is the tell here - that phrase was required on Japanese exports only through 1947-1952, so a plain "JAPAN" mark means these came after that window closed. Japan's postwar tin toy trade leaned hard into small, cheap novelties like this one for the American dime-store counter, and that's exactly where a snake clicker like this belongs - a 1950s-and-on-into-the-60s toy, not one single dated year, because nothing printed on it carries a date.

This whole little troop turned up together in a factory bag, which is why a few of them carry small storage marks from decades spent resting shoulder to shoulder. Some still click sharp and clean; others have gone quiet with age - that's just tin and time.
