Who Made Thomas Apple Sauce? 🍎 Antique 1930s Can Label, Bridgewater VA, NOS 11x4

Size: 11" x 4 1/4"

Discover a genuine piece of Virginia food history with thisantique 1930s Thomas Brand Apple Sauce can label, packed byD. S. Thomas of Bridgewater, Virginia. 🍎
This original lithographed paper label measures about11" x 4¼"and was designed to wrap a 1 lb. 4 oz. tin of “Fancy Sweetened Apple Sauce.” It features two bold red apples with green leaves, the THOMAS brand name in strong lettering, and a clean white field framed by gold accents—simple, striking design that still looks fresh on the wall nearly a century later.

According to local archival records, Thomas Brand apple sauce labels like this were printed byPiedmont Label Co. of Bedford, Virginia, a regional printer that produced colorful labels for many Virginia food packers. The same source notes thatD. S. Thomaswas a busy Bridgewater businessman, also involved in a carriage shop, the Bridgewater Plow Corporation, and a Pontiac dealership in the early 1900s. This label is one of the few surviving artifacts that tie his name directly to the local apple‑packing trade.

In the early 20th century, Virginia was a powerhouse of thecanning and packing industry, with more than 500 small canning companies and over 600 plants in operation by 1919. Many of these were family‑run outfits turning local orchard fruit and garden vegetables into jars and cans for regional markets. Brightly lithographed labels like this Thomas Apple Sauce example were their main advertising tool in grocery stores—making the product stand out on a shelf long before TV or internet marketing.

This piece isNOS (new old stock), not a modern reprint. It was printed for use but never glued to a can, which is why the colors remain crisp and the paper shows little to no wear. Most labels went straight from the printer to the canning line and then into the trash once the can was emptied. Surviving unused labels usually come from old stockroom finds or printer archives, making each one a small rescue from the history of everyday packaging.

For decor, this label is tailor‑made for afarmhouse or vintage‑style kitchen. Frame it and hang it:

  • Above a countertop or stove

  • In a pantry or breakfast nook

  • Alongside other fruit crate labels, vintage recipe cards, or enamelware

The rich red apples and gold border pair beautifully with white cabinets, wood shelves, and rustic pottery. Because this is an original1930s Virginia apple sauce labelwith a documented maker and packer, it brings authentic local history into your home—not just the look of old‑time advertising, but a real story from Bridgewater’s small‑business past.

Antique can labels were printed in limited runs for specific brands, sizes, and seasons. Once remaining NOS examples are framed or in private collections, they rarely return to the market. This Thomas Brand Apple Sauce label is a charming, display‑ready way to preserve a slice ofShenandoah Valley and Virginia canning historyon your wall. 🌾
