This 1940s Whistle crate label was packed by Wileman Bros. & Elliott, Inc. of Cutler, Tulare County, California — the sheet reads PACKED BY, and no printer is named on it. Measuring 13" × 3 3/4", it represents mid‑century California produce packaging (no fruit word is printed on the sheet and no fruit is shown) in an elongated strip format.

The label remains New Old Stock, unused and unmounted, with no wear. Color remains strong with clean edges and an intact surface.

Elongated strip crate labels were commonly used for side‑panel branding on fruit crates and are valued for their clean proportions and graphic clarity when preserved in unused condition. This example is well suited for collectors of California agricultural history and crate label art.

💨 What the Vignette Actually Shows — and What the Sheet Prints

The picture in the arched, tombstone-shaped panel at the left is a brass steam whistle: a bell-shaped whistle body seated on a valve stand with a pull lever and linkage at its base, venting a broad fan-shaped plume of white steam upward against an orange-to-yellow sky. It is not a lamp, and there is no train, no locomotive, no track and no railroad anywhere on the sheet — the whistle stands alone, which is the whole point of the brand name.

• WHISTLE in very large graded orange-to-yellow capitals with a heavy black outline, with BRAND printed separately in small pale blue to the right of the final E — the mark reads WHISTLE BRAND
• PACKED BY / WILEMAN BROS. & ELLIOTT / INC. — ELLIOTT with two T's, and INC. set apart to the right in black, in a different weight and color from the navy firm name
• CUTLER, CALIFORNIA, U. S. A. — the full printed place line

That is the entire text. No fruit word, no net weight, no grade, no size, no count, no country line beyond the U. S. A. in the place line, and no lithographer's imprint — both bottom corners were checked closely and carry only two small navy register dots.
