Who Kept House in Ossining? 🏠 Vintage 1980s Peace of Mind Inc. Housekeeping Patch, NOS

Size: 3 1/4" x 2 1/2"

A little house sitting on a cloud, and three words under it: Peace of Mind. If you wore this patch in the 1980s, you were the person who made that promise good. You cleaned the house.

Peace of Mind, Inc. was a housekeeping company in Ossining, New York, up the Hudson in Westchester County, and this is its patch. It came to me in one find of unused company patches, all of them new old stock.

🏠 What This Is

An unused embroidered patch for Peace of Mind, Inc. - a rectangle with rounded corners on white twill, with a turquoise merrowed edge running unbroken all the way around. At the top, a turquoise house outline rises out of a little cloud and sits on a thick turquoise bar. Under it, PEACE / OF / MIND / INC. in black block letters, each word sitting on its own thin turquoise line, like writing on ruled paper.

It's made to be sewn on, the kind of patch that went on a work shirt, and the back shows the embroidery in reverse.

📅 How Old It Is - The Trademark Is the Clock

Here the paperwork does the dating for us. Peace of Mind, Inc. registered this exact logo with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a service mark for housekeeping services, and the federal record describes it the way you'd describe the patch: clouds, a detached house, and words set off by lines.

  • First used: March 3, 1984 - in commerce from May 13, 1984
  • Filed: November 26, 1984, through a Fifth Avenue trademark firm in Manhattan
  • Registered: June 25, 1985 - U.S. Registration No. 1,345,295
  • Cancelled: December 23, 1991, when the six-year declaration of continued use was never filed

So this patch is 1984 or later, from the years the company was using and protecting that mark - the mid-to-late 1980s.

🏞️ Ossining, Up the River

Ossining sits on the east bank of the Hudson about thirty miles north of New York City, and it's the oldest incorporated village in Westchester County, chartered in 1813. For most of its history it wasn't called Ossining at all. The Sint Sinck people lived there when Frederick Philipse bought the land in 1685, and the name came down as Sing Sing - which is also the name of the state prison built on the riverbank in the 1820s.

That got old. Things made in the village and things made in the prison carried the same name, so on March 25, 1901, the village renamed itself Ossining. The prison kept the old one. The story goes that "sent up the river" started right there, with New York City shipping its convicts up the Hudson to Sing Sing.

🧹 One Little Logo, the Whole Business

I love how much this tiny design says. A house, safe on its cloud, and the words Peace of Mind - your home looked after, so you don't have to think about it. That's the whole pitch of a cleaning company in one patch, and somebody in Ossining cared enough about it to have it registered in Washington.

Small local companies like this one leave almost nothing behind. No ads anyone saved, no history written up, just a line in the federal trademark register and the patches the crew wore. Right now there isn't another one of these for sale anywhere.

🎁 Who It's For

  • Patch collectors, and anyone who likes the odd little company patches that never made it into a catalogue
  • Ossining and Westchester folks - a piece of the village from the 1980s
  • Anyone running a cleaning or housekeeping business today - it makes a great framed gift for the office
  • Denim jacket and workwear people who want something nobody else has on their sleeve
