Size: 1 3/4" x 1 1/4" charm, about 4" overall with the chain and key ring ~ New Old Stock, still in its original bag.

I love a Hello Kitty piece that doesn't look like every other Hello Kitty piece, and this is one of them. Kitty has gone to sea. She is standing in a little pink boat with three portholes and a white anchor on the bow, wearing a white sailor cap, a blue sailor collar and a blue bow instead of her famous red one, and she has a pair of pink binoculars up to her eyes. Three big yellow puffs of smoke curl up behind her from the funnel, and the biggest one is where the chain goes through. It is a sailing design that doesn't turn up anywhere else. It's a rare one.

✨ Taiwan ROC

The charm itself carries no maker's name; the only printing anywhere is that red Taiwan mark on the bag. "Republic of China" is the way Taiwan marked its exports in the years when the island was one of the world's busiest makers of little toys, charms and novelties, the kind of thing that filled dime-store pegboards and gift-shop spinners. A keychain like this was meant to be bought for pocket money and clipped on a bag the same afternoon, which is exactly why so few survive still sealed. The supply is finite - once these last 1970s-80s Taiwan ROC sailor keychains are gone, they'll be very difficult to acquire.

🐱 Kitty White's Story

Hello Kitty was drawn by Sanrio designer Yuko Shimizu and introduced in Japan in 1974. The very first Hello Kitty product was a little vinyl coin purse in 1975, and she arrived in the United States in 1976. Sanrio gave her a whole life: she is Kitty White, a third-grader who lives just outside London with her mom and dad and her twin sister Mimmy, who wears her bow on the other ear. She was famously drawn without a mouth, and Sanrio has long said that is so whoever holds her can bring their own feelings to her.

She has never really slowed down since. She grew from stationery and coin purses into fashion and theme parks, picked up a new wave of fans in the 1990s when musicians and celebrities started carrying her, and celebrated her 50th anniversary in 2024 with a Hollywood film in the works. Through all of it, the early oddball designs like this sailor boat are the pieces collectors get excited about, because nobody expects them.
