It's a fascinating relic from one of the most memorable seasons in baseball history, a piece that will continue to spark lively discussions for decades to come. The 1986 Red Sox went 95 and 66 under John McNamara and won the American League East, beat the California Angels in the ALCS, and took the Mets all the way to seven games in the World Series before it slipped away. On April 29, 1986, a 23-year-old Roger Clemens struck out 20 Seattle Mariners at Fenway, a major league record for a nine-inning game, and he went 24 and 4 and won both the Cy Young and the American League MVP. So that Bank of Boston ad promising a MOST VALUABLE PLAYER turned out to be right on the money.

🐔 Wade Boggs

Wade Boggs played for the Red Sox from 1982 to 1992 and was right in the middle of a run of five American League batting titles between 1983 and 1988, with seven straight 200-hit seasons. They called him the Chicken Man, because he ate chicken before every game. He finally won his ring with the Yankees in 1996 and celebrated by riding around the field on the back of an NYPD horse, became the first player ever to reach 3,000 hits with a home run in 1999, and went into the Hall of Fame in 2005 on his first ballot. The Red Sox retired his number 26.

🏦 Bank of Boston

These are made with the Bank of Boston logo, a symbol of a storied institution. That 1784 in the eagle goes back to the Massachusetts Bank, founded in 1784, only the second bank in the country to receive a charter. It merged into the First National Bank of Boston in 1903, and it took the Bank of Boston name in 1982, making big deals and acquiring assets, trying to fend off competitors by making itself prominent. In 1996 it merged with BayBank to become BankBoston, and in 1999 Fleet bought it. RIP.
