Remember Mr. Red? ⚾ 1992 Cincinnati Reds BodySport Temporary Tattoos with Mr. Red

Size: 5 1/2" x 4 1/2"

Vintage 1992 ⚾ MLB Cincinnati Reds Temporary Tattoos, Mr. Red Fan Memorabilia! This is a BodySport pack, and it says right on the front that it contains 2 of each tattoo transfer shown. There are two designs. The big one is the Reds' Running Man, Mr. Red himself, the ballplayer with a baseball for a head, charging through a red C with CINCINNATI across the top and REDS across the bottom. The second is the classic wishbone C with REDS inside. The MLB Genuine Merchandise roundel sits in the top corner, and across the bottom it promises the tattoos apply in seconds, last for days, are easy to remove and are safe and non-toxic.

Package is 5 1/2" x 4 1/2"~ I have never opened one as I don't want to ruin one to give more specifics or pictures as they are limited.

The back has the whole routine: clean your skin, cut out the transfer, peel off the protective sheet, press it on tacky side down, wet the back with a sponge, wait 30 seconds and slide the paper off, rinse, and it lasts 3 to 5 days. To take it off you rub it with alcohol, baby oil or adhesive tape. The ingredients are P.V.A. copolymer, FD & C Blue No. 1, FD & C Yellow No. 5 & 6, FD & C Red No. 40, iron oxide and white titanium dioxide. The fine print says Copyright 1992 Under License to Highgate Products, Inc. of Dallas, Texas, and MADE IN U.S.A.

🏃 Mr. Red, the Running Man

Mr. Red goes back to 1953, when Cincinnati Enquirer sports cartoonist Harold E. Russell drew an old-time Red Stockings ballplayer with a baseball for a head for the cover of the Reds yearbook. He first went on a Reds uniform as a sleeve patch in 1955, complete with a black mustache and an old-style pillbox cap. In 1961 he started running, and in 1968, when the team brought in its no-facial-hair rule, even Mr. Red had to shave. That clean-shaven Running Man, drawn by Jerry Burnett of the Cincinnati ad agency Nolan, Keelor and Stites, was the Reds' main logo all through the Big Red Machine years and into the early 1990s.

Here is a fun one. From 1968 until 1992, the year on this pack, the Running Man wore number 27, and no Reds player wore it. Logo historian Todd Radom says the number was picked in honor of Dal Maxvill, a St. Louis Cardinals infielder who happened to be the favorite player of owner Francis L. Dale's young son. A live costumed Mr. Red showed up in 1973, and viewers all over the country saw him on the NBC broadcast of Game 5 of the 1975 World Series. He disappeared in the late 1980s, when owner Marge Schott's St. Bernard dogs took over as the team's mascots, and he did not come back in costume until 1997.

🔴 The Reds When This Was New

The Reds were a charter member of the American Association in 1882 and joined the National League in 1890, and they carry the name of the old Cincinnati Red Stockings. The wishbone C on this pack has its own story. In April 1953, with McCarthyism in the air, the team announced it would rather be called the Redlegs, and from 1956 to 1960 the word REDS was taken out of the wishbone C. It came back for good in the 1960s.

The Big Red Machine of Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Pérez and Pete Rose won the World Series in 1975 and 1976, after the team moved from Crosley Field into Riverfront Stadium on the Ohio River in 1970. Then in 1990, under new manager Lou Piniella, the Reds led their division wire to wire, the only National League team ever to do it, with the Nasty Boys, Rob Dibble, Norm Charlton and Randy Myers, closing out games. They swept the heavily favored Oakland A's in four straight in the World Series. In 1992, the year of this pack, they came back from a losing season to a winning one.

⚾ Are the Reds Going to Win It All???

This could be the year!

The vintage tattoos are a reminder of a bygone era in the MLB. Original MLB licensed vintage items are extremely collectible or also really neat to wear as it is Americas pastime, and the interest won't go away anytime soon! 😉

Go Reds!!!
