Remember Tin Snake Clickers? 🐍 Vintage 1950s Noisemaker, Mouth Opens and Closes

Size: 3 1/8" ~ Some still click and some have lost the click - pick the version you want.

🐍 What you're getting

These little guys are tin litho snake clickers with a crocodile's grin - squeeze the tail and the jaws snap open and shut on a spring-steel tongue for that sharp "click." Mine come in three colorways: dark green with yellow spots, black with red spots, and white with blue spots, each one with a painted face and a row of tin teeth. "JAPAN" is printed right along the tail stripe - worn away on some of them, plain as day on others.

🦗 The dime-store cricket family

Clickers like this are called crickets - a bit of spring steel inside that snaps when you press it - and the five-and-dime sold them out of a bin for pocket change. The best-known maker of the design was English: Joseph Hudson started a whistle shop in Birmingham in 1870 that became Acme Whistles, and Acme's brass cricket went into Normandy with the 101st Airborne on D-Day in 1944 - one click to ask friend or foe, two to answer. These tin snakes are the dime-store cousin of that piece of history, not the genuine article - a different maker, a different metal - but it's a fun bit of family tree to know.

🌏 Reading the mark

"JAPAN" alone, with no "Occupied" in front of it, is the tell here - that phrase was required on Japanese exports only through 1947-1952, so a plain "JAPAN" mark means these came after that window closed. After the war Japan's tin toy makers turned out piles of cheap little novelties like this for American dime stores, and that's right where this one fits - a 1950s toy.

🛍️ How they turned up

This whole little troop turned up together in a factory bag, which is why a few of them carry small storage marks from decades spent resting shoulder to shoulder. Some still click sharp and clean; others have gone quiet with age - that's just tin and time.

Returns & Exchange

Take your time — you've got a full six months. If a piece isn't right for you, send it back the way it reached you and we're good.

In the first 30 days your money goes straight back the way you paid. After that it's store credit, so you can put it toward something you'd rather have.

Return shipping we sort out between us, case by case. I don't make this difficult.

If something arrives damaged, or it isn't what I said it was, send me a photo within 48 hours and I'll make it right.

Email info@vintageantiquesgifts.com or call 802-356-9872 — that's me answering, not a call center.

The only things I can't take back are custom or special-order pieces and gift cards.
