Remember Elks Lodge Decals? 🦌 B.P.O.E. Elks Self-Stick Decal, Embla Crest, Unopened on Its 49¢ Card

Size: 3 1/4" ~ Unopened, little to no wear. ~ It is unknown if the adhesive still works, as that is usually the first thing to fail.

A proud bull elk with a full rack of antlers, and a banner reading B.P. and O.E. with a little clock in the middle. These are vintage 1960s Embla Crest self-stick decals for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, still on their original 49¢ cards and sealed in their cellophane sleeves. Highly collectible, and a poignant reminder of a time when we celebrated our community and their contributions.

It is unknown if the adhesive still works, as that is usually the first thing to fail. It may require assistance, also known as glue, to affix.

Nobody's printing these 49-cent lodge decals anymore. Once the sealed ones I have are gone, they will be very difficult to acquire.

🔍 What's on it

  • B.P. and O.E. on the scroll banner, with a clock face between them
  • Card: EMBLA CREST, EASY TO APPLY-SELF-STICK, 49¢

The decal is stapled to its header card, with a hang hole at the top. The back of the card is plain.

🦌 How the Elks Got Their Name

The Elks started out as a bunch of actors having fun. The English actor Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian gathered a club in New York City that called itself the Jolly Corks. When one of the members died just before Christmas 1867 and left his family with nothing, the club turned toward looking after its own. The order dates its founding to February 16, 1868, and by that December the Jolly Corks had become the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

The name came down to a vote. Vivian wanted Buffalos. The members had read up on the elk at the Cooper Institute library, and the elk won, 8 to 7. They liked that it's a native American animal, large and strong yet graceful and fleet of foot, and a herd animal. By 1890 there were 173 Elks lodges across the country. The order's colors are royal purple and white, and these decals went with deep navy instead.

🕚 The Eleven O'Clock Toast

That little clock on the banner is my favorite part. In the Elks emblem the clock marks eleven, the hour of the Eleven O'Clock Toast. Every evening at 11 p.m. the Elks stop to remember their absent and departed brothers, because, as the toast puts it, living or dead, Elks are never forgotten, never forsaken. Look close at these and you'll see the hands point near twelve and one.

The order had 1,611,139 members in 1976. Its national headquarters in Chicago, the Elks National Veterans Memorial overlooking Lincoln Park near Lake Michigan, was conceived as a memorial to the nearly 1,000 Elks lost in World War I. The cornerstone went down on July 7, 1924, and it was dedicated in 1926.

🏷️ Embla Crest

Embla Crest made a whole line of these self-stick emblems for states, cities, the armed services, and lodges like the Elks, Masons, Shriners and Moose, all sold on the same little header cards for pocket change. I have one Embla Crest card that prints the Atlantic Emblem name and Walterboro right under the Embla Crest banner, as Atlantic Emblem Co. of Walterboro, South Carolina. Its five-digit ZIP code means that card was printed in July 1963 or later, and its 803 phone number puts it before the Lowcountry switched to 843 in 1998. Walterboro is the seat of Colleton County, down in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

🏡 Display

It's a perfect gift for an Elk, a lodge brother or sister, or anybody whose dad or granddad belonged to the local lodge, and it looks great framed on its card in a den or the lodge hall.

Please refer to the pictures. It provides details and is considered part of the description for you.

Don't miss out on the opportunity to make this vintage piece of memorabilia a stunning addition to your room!
