Remember Fire Department Decals? 🚒 FD Fire Department Firefighter's Cross Decal, Embla Crest, Sealed on Its Card

Size: 3" ~ Factory sealed, little to no wear. ~ It is unknown if the adhesive still works, as that is usually the first thing to fail.

Embla Crest, a rare vintage 1960s FD Fire Department Decal, is a highly collectible Item. Factory sealed. These are likely the last of their kind in the world, serving as a poignant reminder of a time when we celebrated our community and their contributions. It's the firefighter's cross in gold foil, its arms filled with fine white lines on a bright red field, with FD in red on a black center.

It is unknown if the adhesive still works, as that is usually the first thing to fail. It may require assistance, also known as glue, to affix. Little to no wear.

🏷️ What's Printed on It

  • FD
  • Card: EMBLA CREST, EASY TO APPLY-SELF-STICK, 69¢

These came on hang cards of different colors, pale green, salmon pink and yellow. The back of the card is plain.

🚒 The Firefighter's Cross

Most of us call it a Maltese cross, and it does borrow from the eight-pointed cross of the Knights Hospitaller, which turns up in its fully modern form on a coin of 1567 minted by Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette. Strictly speaking, though, the firefighter's emblem, with those curved arcs between the points, is the Saint Florian cross, named for the patron saint of firefighters.

And every firehouse knows the story that goes with it. As fire departments and the Dallas Firefighter's Museum tell it, when the Knights of St. John fought the Saracens for the Holy Land, the defenders hit them with glass bombs of naphtha and then flaming torches, and the knights who risked their lives pulling their brothers out of the fire became the first firemen. Their fellow crusaders honored them with a cross much like the one firefighters wear today, and because the order held the island of Malta for 268 years, from 1530 until Napoleon took it in 1798, it came to be called the Maltese cross.

🏷️ Embla Crest

The Embla Crest brand was recognized for producing high-end vintage decals as part of the Atlantic Emblem Company, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s, which was located in Walterboro, South Carolina. These decals, often elaborate, reflective, and self-adhesive, were used for travel, suitcases, or advertising purposes and are not just collectible items but also pieces of art. One of the Embla Crest cards prints the company's Walterboro name right under the Embla Crest banner.

🏡 Display

It's a great gift for a firefighter, a volunteer company or a fire buff, and it looks sharp framed on its card in the firehouse.
