⚾ The Miracle Mets, Still in the Wrap

A complete 1969 New York Mets postcard set, still factory sealed in its shrink wrap just as it left Historic Limited Editions of Williston Park, New York. The front card is a watercolor of the World Championship Trophy, signed "s. rini," and the retail sticker lays out what's inside: "1969 New York Mets, Set of 36 Postcards. Limited issue, just 5,000 sets. Swoboda, Koosman, Harrelson, Boswell, Cardwell, Hodges, Gentry, Koonce, Martin, Pignatano, Grote, Berra, McGraw, Ryan, Seaver, Charles, Agee, Yost, Taylor, Jones, Gaspar, Garret, Shea Stadium and Championship Trophy, and much more. The entire '69 Team." That's a young Nolan Ryan in there, by the way. I came across a forgotten stash of these sealed sets, and I'm offering them for less than the $20 printed on that original sticker.

🎨 Susan Rini's Mets

The back card is No. 36, "1969 New York Mets, Rube Walker, From original artwork by Susan Rini," with the Official Licensee Major League Baseball mark, "Limited Issue 5,000 Sets," "Series No. 1," and a spot for a stamp. Susan Rini is a sports artist Historic Limited Editions commissioned for these sets, which came out from the late 1980s into the early '90s. Walker was the Mets' pitching coach from 1968 to 1981, part of Gil Hodges's 1969 staff with Joe Pignatano in the bullpen, Eddie Yost at third and Yogi Berra at first, and all three of those coaches are on the sticker's checklist too.

🏆 1969

This was the team nobody believed in. On July 9, 1969, at Shea Stadium, Tom Seaver retired the first 25 Cubs he faced before Jimmy Qualls singled with one out in the ninth. Seaver called it his "Imperfect Game" and said it was the best he ever pitched. Then in Game 5 of the World Series, on October 16, a pitch from Baltimore's Dave McNally hit Cleon Jones on the foot in the sixth inning. Umpire Lou DiMuro called it a ball until Gil Hodges came out and showed him the shoe polish on the baseball, and Jones went to first. Donn Clendenon homered right after that, and the Mets won the Series that afternoon. At the team's 40th reunion in 2009, Jerry Koosman told the story that Hodges had told him to rub that ball on his shoe. That's the '69 Mets for you.
