Remember Tommie Agee's 1969 World Series? ⚾ Vintage 1980s NY Mets Postcard

Size: 5 1/2" x 3 1/2"

⚾ Vintage 1980s Tommie Agee New York Mets illustrated postcard, unused, from the 1969 Miracle Mets set painted by sports artist Susan Rini.

🎨 On the front, a big smiling portrait of Agee in his blue NY cap, and behind him Agee again at the plate in the home pinstripes, number 20, bat cocked, with the stands full behind him. It's signed S. Rini in the corner, with NEW YORK METS, the Mets skyline logo and TOMMIE AGEE down the blue side panel. The back reads 1969 New York Mets, ★ Tommie Agee ★, From original artwork by Susan Rini, with the Major League Baseball official licensee logo, Published by Historic Limited Editions, Box 400, Williston Park, NY 11596, Limited Issue 5,000 Sets, Series No. 1, Card No. 3, and a crossed-bats Place Stamp Here box.

🏟️ Tommie Agee and the Miracle Mets

Tommie Agee was born August 9, 1942 in Magnolia, Alabama, and went to Mobile County Training School with his future Mets teammate Cleon Jones. With the White Sox in 1966 he became the first rookie in big-league history with more than 20 home runs and 40 stolen bases, and won the American League Rookie of the Year and a Gold Glove. After the 1967 season the Mets traded for him, and on April 10, 1969 he hit a ball halfway up into section 48 of the left field upper deck at Shea Stadium, a shot nobody ever matched.

Then came Game 3 of the 1969 World Series against Baltimore. Agee led off with a home run off Jim Palmer, then made two of the greatest catches in Series history, a backhanded grab in left-center and a headfirst dive in right-center, that saved as many as five runs. The Mets won the Series four games to one. Agee won a second Gold Glove in 1970, making him the first African-American to win one in both leagues. After baseball he ran the Outfielder's Lounge near Shea and did charity work and baseball clinics in New York and Mobile, until he died in New York on January 22, 2001, at 58.

🖌️ The Susan Rini sets

Sports artist Susan Rini was commissioned by Historic Limited Editions to paint the artwork for a run of limited postcard sets in the late 1980s and early 1990s, each one printed in a fixed number that's stated right on the back. The 1969 Miracle Mets set has 36 cards, and this is card No. 3 of Series No. 1, out of 5,000 sets.

A great one for a Mets fan, a 1969 collector, or anybody who remembers those catches.
