What Did Peak Technologies Do With Bar Codes? 📈 A Vintage 1990s The Peak Technologies Group, Inc. Stock Certificate, Delaware, Banknote Corporation of America

Size: 12" x 8"

A real, issued COMMON STOCK certificate of THE PEAK TECHNOLOGIES GROUP, INC., Incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware, $.01 par value, CUSIP 704683 10 1, printed in blue-grey on security paper by the BANKNOTE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. The company name runs across in bold black with a red line climbing into a sharp peak right through the letter A - a mountain top and a heartbeat at the same time, a sharp bit of early-90s branding on a very formal piece of paper. The facsimile seal reads CORPORATE SEAL 1989 DELAWARE, and the Registrar and Transfer Company countersigns as transfer agent and registrar. Each one was typed in, signed, stamped and punch-cancelled.

📅 The 1990s

The seal's 1989 is the year the company was incorporated in Delaware, and it went public in August 1992 with an offering of 2.2 million shares. In April 1997 it signed a merger agreement and its shares were bought up in a tender offer, so these certificates come from the years between. The one you get will carry its own date, number, owner and stamps, and may look a little different from the one in my pictures.

🏷️ What Peak did

Peak Technologies was a bar-code company - data capture and systems integration, the scanners, printers and software that let a warehouse or a factory know exactly what it had and where it was. It grew by buying, fourteen companies between May 1988 and October 1995, which is how a lot of the quiet back-office businesses of that era got big. It never made headlines the way a consumer brand does, but its work showed up every time something got scanned at a dock door. Bar codes were still fairly young then - the first UPC scan at a store checkout was a pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio, on June 26, 1974 - and by the 1990s they were spreading into every warehouse and loading dock in the country, which is exactly the market Peak built itself to serve.

🔄 Absorbed, and still going

The 1997 deal put Peak inside Moore Corporation, the big forms and labels printer, where it became Moore's automatic identification and data capture integration business. Moore became Moore Wallace, R. R. Donnelley took over Moore Wallace in 2004, and in 2005 Platinum Equity bought Peak from Donnelley - and Peak Technologies is still in the bar-code business today. So this certificate is from the years it stood on its own as a public company, between the 1992 offering and the 1997 deal.

🖨️ Engraved the old way

The Banknote Corporation of America printed it in the security-printer's tradition: a blue lathework border of scrollwork and acanthus leaves with corner medallions, the kind of fine line work that was hard to fake. By the 1990s most companies were moving their shareholders to electronic book-entry records, so a paper certificate from a tech company of that decade is a late example of a tradition that was on its way out.

📈 About these

They're 12 by 8 inches. Frame one for a logistics office, a warehouse manager, a supply-chain engineer, or anybody who's ever scanned a bar code for a living. The supply is finite - The Peak Technologies Group's stock is long gone, nobody's issuing these again, and once these last ones are framed, they'll be very difficult to acquire.
