All three 1994 Cornerstone Cybermen foils in one go - FOIL 4, FOIL 5 and FOIL 6 - and read together, their backs tell the whole story of how the Cybermen came to be. Each one has CYBERMEN on the front with the Doctor Who diamond logo, and every set I have is new old stock, never circulated.

🔬 FOIL 4 - Scientist of the Cybermen

The first card is about Dr. Christopher Magnus Howard Pedler - Kit Pedler, 1928-1981 - a London University department head, surgeon, pathologist and microbiologist who studied eye disease and had already designed a monster for a Quatermass film. Story editor Gerry Davis brought him in to give the show some real science, and Pedler, worried about medicine dehumanizing people, suggested that if all the human organs were swapped for metal and plastic, people would lose their emotions and turn almost robotic. That's where the Cybermen came from. Its front shows the Cybermen on the steps before St Paul's Cathedral, the famous scene from The Invasion in 1968.

🧵 FOIL 5 - Lives and Times of the Cybermen

The middle card is about the suits and the voices. Costume designer Sandra Reid built the first Cybermen on almost no time or money for The Tenth Planet, didn't like how hot and heavy they turned out, and redesigned them for The Moonbase and again for The Tomb of the Cybermen - and every designer after her kept the jug handles on the helmet. Actors like Reg Whitehead, Harry Brooks and Gregg Palmer wore the suits, but Roy Skelton and Peter Hawkins, the Dalek voices, did the talking, with those strange jumps in pitch.

✍️ FOIL 6 - Cyberdad of the Cybermen

The last card is Gerry Davis (1927-1991), the BBC story editor who started on Doctor Who with The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve and first got a writing credit with Elwyn Jones on The Highlanders, the story that introduced Jamie. He and producer Innes Lloyd went looking for a science advisor, found Kit Pedler, and the partnership gave the show what the card calls its second most popular monster. Davis co-wrote The Tenth Planet and The Moonbase and shared credit on The Tomb of the Cybermen.

📦 The foils and Davros

Cornerstone put out four series of Doctor Who cards from 1994 to 1996. Series 1 was 36 packs a box, ten cards a pack, and about one pack in twelve, by a collector's checklist, held one of six foil villain cards - three Daleks, three Cybermen. A seventh foil, Davros, only came in the factory set, and the sets that pair the Daleks and Cybermen with him are the ones that finish the run.

Keep them together in a three-pocket page, or frame the trio beside a Cyberman figure. The supply is finite - nobody's printing 1994 Cornerstone foils again, and once these last uncirculated sets are gone, they'll be very difficult to acquire.
