Remember Loyal Order of Moose Decals? 🫎 Loyal Order of Moose P.A.P. Self-Stick Decal, Embla Crest, Sealed on Its Card

Size: 3" ~ Factory sealed, little to no wear. ~ It is unknown if the adhesive still works, as that is usually the first thing to fail.

Embla Crest, a rare vintage 1960s Loyal Order of Moose decal, is a highly collectible item. Factory sealed. These are likely the last of their kind in the world, serving as a poignant reminder of a time when we celebrated our community and their contributions. Nobody's printing 69-cent lodge decals anymore, and once these sealed ones are gone, they will be very difficult to acquire.

It's a big bull moose head on a shiny gold foil disc, with P.A.P. at the top and LOYAL ORDER OF MOOSE around the ring.

It is unknown if the adhesive still works, as that is usually the first thing to fail. It may require assistance, also known as glue, to affix.

I have been doing this for decades, so I am very familiar with every item I sell. Please refer to the pictures. It provides details and is considered part of the description for you.

🏷️ What's Printed on It

  • P.A.P.
  • LOYAL ORDER OF MOOSE
  • Card: EMBLA CREST, EASY TO APPLY-SELF-STICK, 69¢

The cards came in different colors, goldenrod, light blue, yellow and coral, so the one you get may be a different color than the close-up. The back of the card is plain apart from the hang hole and the staple.

🫎 Purity, Aid and Progress

P.A.P. is the Moose motto, Purity, Aid and Progress, and lodges were printing it by 1912. The members said it as a word, too. When TIME covered the order's 39th convention in Philadelphia in September 1927, it reported that the Moose slogan was "Pap," spoken as the initials of Purity, Aid, Progress, and that one Moose greeted another with "Howdy, Pap!"

The Loyal Order of Moose was founded in Louisville, Kentucky, in the spring of 1888 by Dr. John Henry Wilson, with early lodges in Cincinnati, St. Louis and the Indiana towns of Crawfordsville and Frankfort. By the fall of 1906 it was down to just those two Indiana lodges. Then on October 27, 1906, James J. Davis joined as member number 247. Davis was a Welsh immigrant who had worked as an iron puddler, and he later served as U.S. Secretary of Labor under President Harding. As Supreme Organizer he built the Moose into nearly half a million members in 1,000 lodges by 1912.

🏡 Mooseheart and Moosehaven

The Moose put their money where their motto was. The 1911 convention in Detroit called for a home and school for members' children. The order picked a farm near Batavia, Illinois, ended up with 1,023 acres, and took possession on March 1, 1913. Ohio Congressman John J. Lentz gave it the name Mooseheart, and it was dedicated on July 27, 1913, with Vice President Thomas R. Marshall on hand. By 1920 a thousand people lived there. In the autumn of 1922 the Moose opened Moosehaven in Orange Park, Florida, for retired members, starting with 26 acres and 22 residents. Davis said it was a place "to live, labor and love," not "to loaf, linger and die." Today it covers 63 acres with more than 400 residents.

The order has a nightly tradition too. At nine o'clock, Moose members face toward Mooseheart with bowed heads and folded arms and say a silent prayer that ends "God bless Mooseheart," while the children there kneel at their bedsides.

In 1966, right around the time these decals were hanging on the rack, the Moose counted about a million members in 3,500 lodges. They kept growing, to 1,323,240 members by 1979. In 2024 the order started going by the name Moose Fraternity.

🏷️ Embla Crest

Embla Crest sold self-stick emblems for the Elks, the Masons, the Shriners, the Moose and plenty more on little hang cards. I have one Embla Crest card that prints the Atlantic Emblem name and Walterboro right under the Embla Crest banner, as Atlantic Emblem Co. of Walterboro, South Carolina. That card has a five-digit ZIP code, so it's July 1963 or later, and an 803 phone number from before the Lowcountry switched to 843 in 1998. Walterboro goes back to 1783, when Lowcountry planters made it their summer retreat.

🏡 Display

It's a great gift for a lodge member or a Moose family, and it looks sharp framed on its card in a lodge hall, a den or a truck window.

Give this little piece of vintage memorabilia a place of honor in your room!
