If you were anywhere near a Tiger Beat centerfold or a roller rink in 1989, you know this pose: both hands thrown up, palms out, mid-dance-move grin. Navy double-breasted blazer, white turtleneck, cream background, and NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK across the bottom in red. No name is printed on it, but this is the portrait collectors have always called Jordan Knight. Around the rim in red: ©1989 BIG STEP PRODUCTIONS, INC. and BUTTON-UP 2011 AUSTIN TROY, MI 48083 - the 2011 is a street number, not a year. Cream back, bar pin, never worn.

💼 Big Step and the button business

Big Step Productions was the New Kids' own production and merchandising company, and buttons weren't an afterthought for it - when Big Step filed for federal trademarks in May 1990, the goods it listed included ornamental buttons and pins and oversized novelty buttons. It also co-produced the band's 1990 Saturday morning cartoon on ABC. By 1991 the band's merchandise was estimated at $400 million a year, and Forbes put the New Kids at the top of its list of highest-paid entertainers, ahead of Michael Jackson and Madonna. A button off a concert table or a mall rack was one tiny piece of that.

⚖️ The case that changed trademark law

Here's the part that reaches way past pop music. In 1990 Big Step, the band and its management sued USA Today and The Star over newspaper 900-number polls asking readers to vote for their favorite New Kid, saying the papers were cashing in on the band's name. They lost. In 1992 Judge Alex Kozinski of the Ninth Circuit wrote the opinion in New Kids on the Block v. News America Publishing that created nominative fair use - you can use somebody's trademark to name them, as long as you don't suggest they endorse you. Law students still learn it, and it exists because five kids from Boston got so big that even naming them was a business.

🎶 Jordan

Jordan Knight, born May 17, 1970, was the lead voice of the group, the falsetto on the big ballads, and the younger brother of Jonathan, who was in the band too. Hangin' Tough took its time - it came out in 1988 and climbed for more than a year before it hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1989 - and by then I'll Be Loving You (Forever), with Jordan out front, had already been a No. 1 single that June.

📌 Button-Up of Michigan

Button-Up made licensed band buttons through the 1980s - its 1984 buttons give an address on Ryan Road in Warren, Michigan, and by the late '80s it had moved up to Austin in Troy, just north of Detroit. This same Jordan design was also sold sealed on Button-Up cards, as part of a series of red-logo New Kids buttons.

🎤 About these

Every one I have is the same unused 1 1/2 inch button. Pin it on a jean jacket, frame it with a ticket stub, or give it to the friend who always picked Jordan. The supply is finite - nobody's making 1989 Big Step buttons again, and once these last unused ones are gone, they'll be very difficult to acquire.
