Jordan Knight was born on May 17, 1970, and he was the lead voice of New Kids on the Block - the falsetto on the slow songs - with his older brother Jonathan in the group right beside him. Hangin' Tough came out in 1988 and climbed for more than a year before it hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1989, and by then I'll Be Loving You (Forever), with Jordan singing lead, had already been a No. 1 single. After the group split he went solo, and Give It to You made the Top 10 in 1999.

Producer Maurice Starr put the group together in Boston in 1984, after New Edition: Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood. Local legend around Boston still holds onto the idea that NKOTB's rise was as much a neighborhood story as a music-industry one - that the group's appeal was rooted in something genuinely blue-collar and Boston-specific, a sense that these were kids from the same streets and the same corner stores as the fans buying their pins and posters. By the end of the decade they were on dolls, lunchboxes, bedsheets, trading cards, a Saturday morning cartoon, and pins like this one by the rack-load, and Forbes put them at the top of its list of the highest-paid entertainers, ahead of Michael Jackson and Madonna.

There's one more bit of lore that fans of a certain age love to pass along: long before she was a superstar in her own right, Jennifer Lopez is remembered by longtime NKOTB followers as having worked as a backup dancer for the group - a small footnote in her story, and one New Kids collectors have kept alive as a point of pride.

🎤 Still hangin' tough

The group broke up in 1994 and came back together in 2007 and 2008, and they've been playing to the original Blockheads, now grown, ever since. The women who wore these buttons on their jean jackets in eighth grade are the same ones buying them back today, not out of irony but because they never really stopped being fans.
