Original 1970s grape crate label printed with the cooperative's name โ€” SEQUOIA FOOTHILL FRUIT GROWERS, WOODLAKE, CALIF. 93286 โ€” set with no verb beside it at all, so the sheet does not say what part they played; its only printing credit is an imprint on the pale blue bottom border that will not resolve at the magnification available.

This label measures 12 1/2 inches ร— 4 inches and was used on California grape cartons during the later years of the cooperativeโ€™s operation.

The label shows little to no wear, with strong original color and clean edges. Stored flat and well preserved.

Sequoia Foothill Fruit Growers was founded in 1922 as a cooperative serving foothill growers in Tulare County. The organization operated for more than six decades before its charter was terminated in 1982, leaving behind a range of distinctive agricultural packaging and branding.

Big Stump labels are collected for their regional identity and representation of Californiaโ€™s postโ€‘war agricultural industry.

๐Ÿท๏ธ What Is Printed on This Label

Read off the sheet itself, verbatim โ€” this is the label's own printed text, not a description of it:

  • REG. U. S. PAT. OFF.
  • Big Stump
  • BRAND
  • GRAPES
  • SEQUOIA FOOTHILL FRUIT GROWERS
  • WOODLAKE, CALIF. 93286
  • UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
  • PRODUCE OF U. S. A.
  • [bottom-border imprint โ€” present on the sheet, unreadable at any magnification]

The ZIP code is printed on the label โ€” WOODLAKE, CALIF. 93286. Five-digit ZIP codes began in July 1963, so the sheet itself cannot predate mid-1963. That is hard positive support for the post-war dating and it had never been cited.

The artwork the brand is named for, described on no island: a painted grove of giant sequoias with a man and a woman in mid-century dress standing together on the flat top of an enormous cut redwood stump, light shafting down between the trunks, on a long narrow lug strip with a pale blue border over a deep navy ground.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is spelled out in full beneath the address, in addition to PRODUCE OF U. S. A. There is no net weight, no grade and no printed date.

Returns & Exchange

Take your time โ€” you've got a full six months. If a piece isn't right for you, send it back the way it reached you and we're good.

In the first 30 days your money goes straight back the way you paid. After that it's store credit, so you can put it toward something you'd rather have.

Return shipping we sort out between us, case by case. I don't make this difficult.

If something arrives damaged, or it isn't what I said it was, send me a photo within 48 hours and I'll make it right.

Email info@vintageantiquesgifts.com or call 802-356-9872 โ€” that's me answering, not a call center.

The only things I can't take back are custom or special-order pieces and gift cards.
